A good technology decision starts with the real operational need. This guide outlines the important checks and tradeoffs relevant to equipment selection in Pakistan.
Inventory every powered device
Count cameras, PoE switches, recorder, router, access points and any critical monitoring screens. For PoE cameras, use the switch power draw or calculate powered-device loads with losses. Check start-up or peak loads, not only label averages.
Watts, VA and battery autonomy
UPS VA capacity is not the same as supported real-power watts. A battery rated in amp-hours does not translate to runtime without voltage, efficiency, discharge behavior and condition. A qualified installer can confirm safe wiring and protection.
Keep realistic margins
Choose margin for battery ageing and actual consumption. A system advertised for several hours may perform very differently depending on load and battery age. Consider ventilation and regular inspections.
Start with watts, not marketing VA
List every camera, recorder, PoE switch, router, modem and any monitor that must survive an outage. Use measured input watts where available, or manufacturer maximum values with a sensible engineering allowance. If a PoE switch powers eight cameras, include both the cameras and switch overhead in the power budget without counting the same load twice. A UPS rated in volt-amperes must also have sufficient real-watt capacity.
Estimate backup energy
An approximate energy budget is load in watts multiplied by required hours, expressed in watt-hours. Battery capacity at the DC bus must account for inverter losses, usable depth of discharge, ageing and temperature. For example, a 100 W actual load for two hours needs about 200 Wh at the output before losses and reserve. This is a planning estimate, not a promise of runtime from a named UPS without its discharge data.
Choose topology and connection points
Small office line-interactive UPS units and larger online double-conversion systems solve different power-quality problems. Verify surge load, battery type, charger size and safe ventilation. Check whether the CCTV power supply restarts cleanly after an extended failure. In Lahore, frequent load shedding makes recharge time and battery health just as important as a single headline backup duration.
Validate using a controlled outage test
After installation, document the connected load and test the system for a supervised interval with stakeholders informed. Confirm recording continues, timestamps remain correct, network equipment stays online and automatic shutdown happens safely if configured. Do not unplug life-safety equipment or critical production systems casually. Keep a battery replacement and inspection schedule.
Questions and answers
Will a UPS also keep the internet working?
Only if the relevant router, ONT, network equipment and upstream services remain powered and operational.
Can I run cameras without the router?
Locally connected DVR/NVR systems can often continue recording if their cameras and recorder stay powered; remote viewing generally needs networking and internet connectivity.
Does a bigger VA number guarantee more backup hours?
No. Available battery energy, actual watts, UPS efficiency and battery condition determine runtime.
Should I include the NVR monitor in the UPS load?
Only if it must stay operational during the outage. Record and calculate every device chosen for backup.
