TECHNOLOGY EXPLAINED

A straightforward CCTV & IT glossary.

Understand the terms used in CCTV quotations, network plans, recorder configurations and access-control discussions.

Analog HD

A CCTV camera system using a compatible coaxial video interface and suitable DVR or XVR. Different analog standards must not be assumed to be interchangeable.

Bitrate

The average rate of video data over time. Recording storage and network throughput depend on actual bitrate rather than megapixels alone.

CCTV

Closed-circuit television, a term commonly used for video surveillance with cameras, recorders and associated monitoring equipment.

DVR

Digital video recorder used with supported camera interfaces, often analog CCTV systems. Input standards and maximum resolution vary by unit.

H.265

A video compression standard that can reduce required bitrate relative to some older codecs, depending on scene, encoder settings and compatibility.

IP Camera

A network-based camera that communicates over an IP network. It may use PoE, external DC power or another supported power method.

IP Rating

Ingress Protection classification for equipment enclosures. The first and second digits relate to solids and water exposure under specified test conditions.

NVR

Network video recorder, used to ingest supported camera streams. Channel counts, codec support and storage bays must be checked.

ONVIF

A set of interoperability specifications used in network video and access-control equipment. Feature support depends on exact product profile and implementation.

PoE

Power over Ethernet, which can provide both power and data over a compatible network cable. Switch power budget and cable conditions matter.

PTZ

Pan-tilt-zoom, describing devices that can remotely change viewing direction and, in some models, optical zoom level.

Retention

The time for which recorded footage is stored before deletion or overwrite, as configured and limited by storage capacity.

UPS

Uninterruptible power supply, used to provide short-term backup during power interruption. Actual runtime depends on load, battery and efficiency.

VMS

Video management software that helps operators view, record, search and manage video from supported devices.

VLAN

Virtual local area network that logically separates network traffic and may support security and performance design.
